The story begins with amla, or Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica), a fruit deeply associated with the Indian subcontinent and cultivated across several parts of India. Its unmistakably tart, astringent character makes it particularly suited to chutneys, pickles and preserves.
Amla is essentially a winter fruit, making this chutney particularly at home on the Indian winter table. Preserving the fruit as chutney is also a practical way of carrying its distinctive flavour beyond the fresh harvest season.
Fresh amla is cooked and transformed into a savoury-sweet chutney, balancing its natural sharpness with spices and complementary flavours. The result retains the character of the fruit while making its intense tartness easier to pair with an everyday Indian meal.
Amla occupies an unusually important place in India's food and wellness traditions and has long been used in preparations ranging from preserves and pickles to traditional formulations. Our chutney takes that familiar Indian ingredient and returns it to the table in one of India's oldest culinary formats: the chutney.
Serve Amla Chutney with parathas, dal-chawal, millet rotis, khichdi or a cheese board, or use a spoonful to brighten a wrap or sandwich. Amla is naturally recognised as a rich dietary source of vitamin C; this chutney offers a contemporary way to bring the fruit's characteristic flavour into the everyday pantry.
